My First Footy Match

Is Carlton vs North Richmond on a cold Friday! Why Carlton? Boss is a big supporter. They are one of the earliest Footy team and really huge during my Boss's growing years. Unfortunately a run of scandal and back luck has rendered them mediocre in my time.

That did not deterred Boss from recruiting me. I have been forwarded their newsletter and on the event day, been given the Carlton scarf to make things official. Now I have to say in my resume I support Carlton.

My Boss's idea of a Footy nite is drinks and more drinks with almost no food. I only had to make do with some sandwich. That is enough to make me decide I will never watch Footy with my Boss ever again. I also didn't know it at that time but he manage to secure us the best level seats, though we sat on the opponent side. A joke on my Boss? God knows... anyway Boss warned me that he will be offended if I cheered for the other team. Footy is serious business in Koala Land.

The stadium looks bigger than a football field though I am not sure. The 3 flag poles you see on the edge is the goal post. It reminds of Quidditch in Harry Potter but I am wise enough not to mention this to Boss. Footy is serious business.

As opening ceremony and tradition, the players will run through this big banner. I do not know the rules of the games but like any games with balls, the general idea is to throw the ball at the opponent's goal. Throughout the game I asked my Boss many (rookie) questions which he answered patiently. I am sure he expects it when he decide to take me and our PM to a game. We are both migrants.

Throughout the game I also noticed guys in pink shirts running around. I asked my Boss why are the referees wearing pink. He laughed so hard. They are not referees, but the Coach's messengers. The Coach who sat on the Coach Box on our level, will give instructions to the messengers which in turns run around the field, passing those instructions. Interesting~

They can also change players without calling a time out. So you have people coming and going just like that. Interesting ~ ~

At the end of the match, to my BIG surprise I was actually quite hoarse from shouting. You do not need to know the rules of the game to be caught up with it. The cheers, boos and with Boss telling me who is who is enough to build a shallow foundation for the match. The best part of the whole night? Carlton won by a small margin! Boss said it was one of the best game in the season too and I am lucky enough to see it live!

Will I ever go to another match again? Maybe BUT MUST HAVE PROPER DINNER.
